Real Tsunami Footage and Formation - South-East Asia 海啸
Real Tsunami Footage and Formation - South-East Asia 海啸
Shocking, little-seen video footage from some of the worst tsunamis on record. Through educating ourselves, we can help avoid future disasters such as we have seen with the Japan Tsunami of 2011 and the Asia Boxing Day Tsunami of 2004. Contains images some may find distressful. 11th March 2011- BBC NEWS REPORTS: A tsunami has caused major damage in north-eastern Japan, after a massive 8.9 magnitude earthquake strikes off the coast. Our thoughts are with all those affected. These are real images and clips, mainly from the 2004 disaster that shook the world. (I realise the song choice (Strawberry Swing) has been seen by some as perhaps inappropriate - I'm sorry for any offense taken. None was intended) For the thousands still homeless, still dying, we must make a difference. Thank you for your invaluable support Individual video clips copyright of National Geographic and BBC2 Productions. Songs: Strawberry Swing - Coldplay Pills - The Perishers The 2004 Tsunami Video - Help Make a Difference You can find me on Twitter at tom_westford for updates/queries/musings - tweet me and I'll be sure to reply/ follow you back. Let's hope for a swift end to this disaster. Thank you.

Fire jumping and other antics: Rural Olympics in South Asia
Fire jumping and other antics: Rural Olympics in South Asia
Every winter the Grewal Sports Association Stadium, Quila Raipur hosts The Quila / Qila Raipur Rural Sports Festival, not only regular events like Bhagwant Gold Cup Hockey Tournament, air pistol shooting, cycling, track and field equestrian events including tent pegging and tug of war take place in this festival but also traditional rural sporting events as bullock cart races, camels race, dogs race, sack lifting and kabaddi also take place. This particular game is a dangerous one where one has to pass through a ring of fire.Another game including in this clip is done between two people where they have to roll like a tyre . According to the Rural Olympics website: It was in 1933. Philanthropist Inder Singh Grewal visualised an annual recreational meet where farmers from areas surrounding Kila Raipur could get together and test their corporal endurance. The idea gave birth to Kila Raipur Sports, the undisputed "Rural Olympics". In over six decades the festival has grown from a toddler to a prancing, energetic youthful organisation. This pioneer rural sports festival has become an annual international event, which is normally held in the first weekend of February. A dynamic team of organisers -- Grewal Sports Association -- has taken yet again another pioneering step of giving rural women a break in sports. Today this festival of the rustics attracts more than 4000 sportsmen and women, both of recognised and traditional sports. The three-day festival is witnessed by more ...

Moving Ahead in South Asia - agriculture and food security in the world today.
Moving Ahead in South Asia - agriculture and food security in the world today.
Agriculture and food security are the top most priorities in the world today. An estimated 925 million people around the world, almost 1/6 of humanity, are suffering from hunger. More than 30% of the undernourished people of the world live in just seven countries. The current global population of 6.7 billion is expected to stabilize at 9.2 billion by 2050. This raises the question whether the improvements of food production will be able to match the population growth in a sustainable manner until 2050. Use of commercial fertilizer is responsible for 40-60% of the world's food production. Future intensification of production systems will require further increase in fertilizer use. This must be done in an environmentally safe manner. International Plant Nutrition Institute (IPNI) advocates that fertilizer best management practices (BMPs), combined with sound agronomy, are necessary to produce more food. And the implementation of fertilizer BMPs will be protective of our natural resources. web: www.ipni.net twitter @PlantNutrition

India and South East Asia
This film India and Southeast Asia traces back India's historical relations with Southeast Asia seen through the prism of maritime contact between the two regions. The film travels through 10 countries and explores the growth of port towns in India that played a critical role in the exchange of nutmeg, pepper and cloves to the highly prized Gujarati textiles.
